To the gentlemen of Newport.  The picture in a late South-
Carolina Gazette, if designed for me, is drawn from the
wrong original; and the true one, tho' of the same name with
me, may, for my knowledge of him, be the priest of Saturn,
or the image that fell down from Jupiter. . . . 
  He that shall rail against his absent friends,
  Or hear them scandaliz'd, and not defends,
  Sports with their fame, and speaks whate'er he can,  
  And only to be thought a witty man.
